Rabobank rider Erik Dekker of the Netherlands takes a two-up sprint from Lance Armstrong (USPS) for his second-ever World Cup win in the 2001 Amstel Gold race. Dekker not only gets the victory bouquet for home squad Rabobank, but thanks to a 2nd place in the Tour of Flanders, he also takes over the top slot in the overall World Cup standings. Dekker says of his win, "the whole team did it, but I had to finish it but I died 1000 deaths in the last climb." Armstrong remained confident. "This is the first time this year that I have ridden more than 250 kilometers. I had good legs and good breathing. Seeing all the best riders around me was good for my morale; I was in good company. It's a good starting point for the Tour," Armstrong said. Lotto's Serge Baguet, Rabobank's Marcus Zberg, and Domo's Johan Museeuw came in 3rd, 4th, and 5th.
